Overview
Empire of the Wolf is a completed trilogy following an Emperor's Justice, a travelling magistrate and executioner of a sprawling, crumbling empire, and his clerk, as imperial law collides with rebellion, a rising religious movement, and the empire's own internal rot. The opening novel, The Justice of Kings (2022), follows Justice Sir Konrad Vonvalt and his scribe Helena Sedanka as they investigate allegations of paganism and heresy in a village of the fictional Sovan Empire, before The Tyranny of Faith (2023) and The Trials of Empire (2024) widen the conflict into open rebellion and a direct challenge to the empire's authority. Richard Swan's debut received a starred review from Kirkus Reviews, which called it "an intriguingly dark... deconstruction of a beloved mystery trope," and reviewers repeatedly praised its fusion of fantasy-mystery plotting with a philosophical interrogation of justice and law, with some comparing its setting and cast to other grim, politically fraught secondary-world fantasies.
