Synopsis

Medalon's Defenders gather at Treason Keep, the fortress on the northern border, as the Karien priests of the Overlord mass their invasion and the Sisters of the Blade, their rule compromised by the alliance that put Joyhinia on the First Sister's throne, hesitate between resistance and surrender. R'shiel, now known to be the demon child and only beginning to understand the Harshini blood and the god-given purpose she carries, is drawn into the war's politics with Tarja, while the Hythrun warlord Damin Wolfblade and the Fardohnyan princess Adrina, married to a Karien prince she despises, enter the story in a love-hate partnership that readers have counted among the series' great pleasures. The second novel of the Demon Child trilogy, generally held to improve on the first.

Notes

  • From the series record (Demon Child): The first Hythrun trilogy (2000-2001): R'shiel, the demon child, Tarja of the Defenders and the atheist Sisterhood of Medalon, as Karien's god-driven invasion and the hidden Harshini draw the kingdoms into the gods' quarrel.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.

  • Publication order, within the series Demon Child: position 2 of 3: previous Medalon (2000) · next Harshini (2001)
  • Internal chronology, within The Hythrun Chronicles: position 4 of 8: previous The Lyre Thief (2016) · next Warrior (2005)
