Synopsis

Eight years have passed since Marla Wolfblade buried her second husband, and her one goal is to keep Hythria and its throne safe for her son Damin until he is old enough to rule. Her enemies have not gone away: Alija Eaglespike, now High Arrion of the Sorcerers' Collective, still schemes to put her own sons on the throne, and the court of the High Prince remains a nest of intrigue. Marla, who has made herself the power behind her brother's throne, must play the game of the Rules with Elezaar at her side, arrange marriages, buy allies and dispose of threats, while the young Damin is sent to be fostered among the warlords who will one day be his vassals or his rivals. The second novel of the Wolfblade trilogy.

Notes

  • From the series record (Wolfblade): The prequel trilogy (2004-2005): Marla Wolfblade of Hythria, a princess bartered as a bride, learns the Rules of Gaining and Wielding Power from the slave Elezaar and makes herself the power behind the throne, for the sake of her son Damin, the warlord of the Demon Child books.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.

  • Publication order, within the series Wolfblade: position 2 of 3: previous Wolfblade (2004) · next Warlord (2005)
  • Internal chronology, within The Hythrun Chronicles: position 5 of 8: previous Treason Keep (2001) · next Retribution (2017)
