Synopsis
Marla Wolfblade of Hythria is determined to restore her family's great name, but conspirators surround her: her brother Lernen, the High Prince, is a weak and dissolute man who cannot even guarantee an heir, and the sorcerer Alija Eaglespike plots to seize the throne for her own house. Marla, a sixteen-year-old princess whose only value is as a bride, is handed a slave, Elezaar the Dwarf, a small man with big secrets, who begins to teach her the Rules of Gaining and Wielding Power. The first novel of the Wolfblade trilogy, set a generation before the Demon Child books, follows her transformation from political pawn to political player, and the birth of her son Damin, the warlord of the earlier trilogy.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
