Overview
Chanters of Tremaris is Australian author Kate Constable's completed trilogy (2002-2005), set on the island world of Tremaris, where certain people can work chantment, magic performed through song. Calwyn, a young priestess raised in the isolated, ice-walled community of Antaris, discovers she is the legendary Singer of All Songs, capable of mastering every form of chantment, and is drawn out into the wider world alongside the chanter Darrow to confront the sorcerer Samis, who seeks to dominate Tremaris through the same power. Published by Allen & Unwin in Australia beginning with The Singer of All Songs (2002), the trilogy drew mixed reviews: Kirkus found the magic system well sketched but the protagonist somewhat passive, while Publishers Weekly judged the density of invented detail initially overwhelming but ultimately rewarding, praising Constable's imaginative world-building across the full trilogy.
