Overview
The Dagger and the Coin is Daniel Abraham's completed five-book epic fantasy sequence (2011–2016), set in a secondary world once ruled by dragons and now shaped as much by banking and trade as by armies. A small border dispute in the Free Cities escalates, across the five novels, into a continent-spanning war, following three interlocking threads: Marcus Wester, a mercenary captain who wants nothing to do with the fighting; Cithrin bel Sarcour, a ward of a banking house who becomes a financial power in her own right; and Geder Palliako, an awkward, bookish nobleman whose accidental rise under the sway of a sinister faith reshapes the fate of nations. The series is known for treating economics and finance as a genuine engine of its plot, alongside its dragons, prophecy, and war.
