Overview
C. L. Polk's The Kingston Cycle (2018-2020) is a complete gaslamp-fantasy trilogy comprising Witchmark (2018), Stormsong (2019), and Soulstar (2020), set in Aeland, a post-war, Edwardian-inspired secondary world still recovering from a conflict modeled on the First World War. Across the three books it weaves a feminist, political narrative about the uprising of a magically gifted underclass kept subordinate and exploited by the ruling aristocracy, pairing that uprising with a distinct queer romance and a murder-mystery plot in each volume. The trilogy moves between a battle-scarred doctor investigating suspicious deaths at a veterans' hospital, his aristocratic sister navigating court politics, and the wider revolution their choices help set in motion. Witchmark, the opening novel, won the 2019 World Fantasy Award for Best Novel, and the series was noted for combining Edwardian manners-and-magic worldbuilding with an explicitly progressive political core uncommon in gaslamp fantasy at the time.
