Overview
The Rages Trilogy is a secondary-world epic fantasy by Kritika H. Rao, comprising The Surviving Sky (2023) and The Unrelenting Earth (2024), with a concluding volume yet to appear. It is set on Nakshar, one of several floating cities that survive constant, violent magical storms called Rages by anchoring themselves to the earth below with living, sentient trees. Its magic system is built on architects, who manipulate matter and the trees' growth through meditative trance and a psychic bond with a yaksha spirit, a practice depicted as physically and spiritually costly. The story centers on Ahilya, a scientist skeptical of the architect tradition, and her husband Iravan, one of the city's most gifted architects, whose arranged marriage is strained by their opposing views of the magic he practises. The series draws visibly on South Asian mythology and cosmology without retelling any single myth directly, and was praised on release for blending hard-science-fiction structure with fantasy magic.
