It follows Linghu Chong, the carefree first apprentice of Yue Buqun, leader of the Mount Hua Sect, as the Lin family's Bixie Swordplay Manual draws the Five Mountains Sword Sects Alliance and the Sun Moon Holy Cult into a struggle for power. The book is set in the martial world with no specific historical background and has been read as an allegory of power struggles. It is a single complete novel.
