Overview

An epic fantasy trilogy told largely through letters between two women warriors, Shizuka and O-Shizuka, bound by fate across a Mongolian- and East-Asian-inspired world, and drawn into a shared destiny to fight the returning Traitorous Son, an ancient demonic threat their respective empires have spent generations preparing against. K Arsenault Rivera's The Tiger's Daughter (2017) frames most of its narrative as Shizuka's own long letter recounting the pair's childhood friendship and growing bond, while The Phoenix Empress (2018) and The Warrior Moon (2021) widen the storytelling beyond that single epistolary device as the political and supernatural stakes of their shared destiny escalate across the two later volumes. The trilogy's blend of romance, mythic-scale prophecy and an East Asian-inflected secondary world places it among the more prominent queer epic fantasy series of the late 2010s.
