Overview

Vita Nostra follows Sasha Samokhina, a teenager coerced by an unsettling stranger into enrolling at a strange, isolated institute where the coursework has nothing to do with ordinary study: students memorize dense, meaningless texts, perform impossible physical and mental exercises, and slowly discover that failure carries real, terrible consequences for themselves and their families. What begins as psychological horror about coercive education gradually reveals itself as something much stranger, a story about language, transformation, and what a person becomes once they stop being fully human.

The trilogy catalogued here is the English-language publication of the story, translated by Julia Meitov Hersey: the original Russian-language sequence, written by the Ukrainian husband-and-wife team of Sergey and Marina Dyachenko under the umbrella title Metamorphoses, runs to five books, and the English trilogy repackages books one, four, and five of that original as a self-contained arc.

Original Russian sequence (Metamorphoses) ran longer; the English-translation sequence (Julia Meitov Hersey, HarperVoyager) collects books 1, 4, and 5 of the Russian original as a self-contained trilogy, following the translator/publisher's own packaging rather than the Russian numbering.
