Michael Scott Rohan (22 January 1951 - 12 August 2018) was a Scottish author of fantasy and science fiction and a writer on opera, born and died in Edinburgh. His most notable work is The Winter of the World, begun with The Anvil of Ice (1986) and set in an invented frozen world imagined in some depth, followed by The Forge in the Forest and The Hammer of the Sun and, a decade later, three more novels from Orbit ending with Shadow of the Seer (2001). He also wrote the Spiral sequence, including Cloud Castles, the novels The Ice King and A Spell of Empire with Allan J. Scott, and The Lord of Middle Air, whose author's note claims a common ancestor with Walter Scott in Michael Scot, a character in the novel. He grew in stature as a writer throughout his career, but owing to illness fell silent as a novelist after 2001, while continuing to write about classical opera.
