Overview
Michael Scott Rohan's The Winter of the World is set in an invented frozen world imagined in some depth, an age of advancing ice in which the Powers struggle endlessly for dominion, and draws on myth, among them Wayland the Smith and the rusalka. Its hero, Alv, who becomes Elof the Mastersmith, is caught up in a long war against the Ice, fought with devices that include a weaponized blast furnace and the Hammer of the Sun itself. A history of ancient magic, mystery and enchantment, of light and darkness, and a quest whose hero's deeds would live on in myth and legend.
