Suyi Davies Okungbowa was born Osasuyi Okungbowa in 1989 in Benin City, Nigeria. He earned a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from the University of Benin before pursuing an MFA in creative writing at the University of Arizona. He now lives in Ottawa, Canada, where he serves as an assistant professor of creative writing at the University of Ottawa. Wired magazine has described him as one of the most promising voices in a wider cohort of contemporary African speculative fiction writers; he publishes adult fiction under his full name and children's and young-adult work as "Suyi Davies," deliberately separating the two strands of his career. His debut novel, David Mogo, Godhunter (2019), follows a demigod hired to hunt fallen orishas in a fantastical, near-future Lagos, and was praised for its distinctive voice, though its episodic three-part structure drew some critical comment. He is best known for the Nameless Republic epic fantasy trilogy, comprising Son of the Storm (2021) and Warrior of the Wind (2023), with Season of the Serpent forthcoming; NPR praised the series for its handling of power, relationships, and political intrigue. His 2024 science fiction novella Lost Ark Dreaming examines pathways to ecological and communal healing. Okungbowa's honors include the 2020 Nommo Award for Best Novel for David Mogo, Godhunter, and both the 2025 Ignyte Award and 2025 Nommo Award for Best Novella for Lost Ark Dreaming, alongside a Nebula Award finalist nomination.
