Synopsis

The third novel moves the Lands of Corza into their age of industrialisation: the first automobiles drive through cities of smoking chimneys that cry out for more resources and more progress, and for the first time Corza pushes beyond its own frontiers in a frantic search for them, colliding with the peoples of the South, who still love an untouched natural world and raise desperate defences against the newcomers. Tyrawen, daughter of a Deputy, is part of the wave of explorers until a kidnapping changes her course: a promise she must keep delivers her into the mysticism of the tribes, who make her the living embodiment of a divinity. The Lands of Corza set out to discredit her, but the primitive beliefs they despise have a force of their own, and the future will be drawn either by respecting the old peoples or by overthrowing a civilisation.

Notes

  • From the series record (Terras de Corza): Madalena Santos's Portuguese saga of the Lands of Corza, a fictional set of twelve kingdoms modelled on central and southern Europe, told in four independent novels set in four eras, from the Middle Ages to industrialisation and back to pre-Roman origins, without magic or imaginary races: a geopolitical epic of travel and intrigue.
