Synopsis

This second novel of the Chronicles of the Emerged World continues directly from the opening volume, following the war-torn Lands Above and the newly revealed underwater realm of Zalenia. Sennar, a member of the ruling Council, is sent on a diplomatic mission to Zalenia to win military aid from its king for the fight against the Tyrant, and is initially arrested on arrival before he can make his case. In Zalenia he also grows close to a local named Ondine. Meanwhile Nihal, a half-elf who has just become a Dragon Knight, trains alongside her academy friend Laio and confronts rival Dragon Knights loyal to the Tyrant, including the skilled Dola. Her path leads toward a set of eight sacred stones said to be needed to check the Tyrant's power, setting the two heroes on converging journeys.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
