Synopsis

Opening the Wars of the Emerged World trilogy years after the earlier saga, this novel introduces Dubhe, a young thief exiled as a child after accidentally killing a playmate and later trained by the wanderer Sarnek. Branded with a curse that unleashes a beast within her, she is forced into the ranks of a guild of assassins led by Yeshol, a former servant of the fallen tyrant Aster. Inside the guild she meets Lonerin, a mage secretly spying for the Water Council to uncover its conspiracies. As Dubhe navigates the guild's dangerous missions and rituals, she and Lonerin discover a plot to resurrect Aster using Tarik, the last remaining half-elf, as a vessel, and must find a way to escape the organization and warn the Water Council before the scheme can proceed.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
