Synopsis

In the north an unstable peace reigns in the lands of the Vikings who subdued the Vandals, while in the shadows the masters of the Dark Art go on conspiring: they have not given up on seizing the magic stones of the sorceress Aranwen. Edwina, still the narrator, lives torn between two callings, princess of the Viking people and Guardian of the Sun's Tear, and under a curse that weighs on the stone she keeps: its guardian may bear a child only to the Sun King. Around her the saga's prophecy tightens, asking whether the essences of Sun and Moon can be fused into one to give rise to a knowledge like a god's, and the fourth volume, grown from the author's research into the initiation rituals of young Vikings, follows her and the warrior girl Thora through the circle of fear that gives the book its name, in which fear blinds and only the heart's voice shows the way.

Notes

  • From the series record (A Saga das Pedras Mágicas): Sandra Carvalho's eight-volume Portuguese epic fantasy (Editorial Presença, Via Láctea, 2005-2013): three generations of a Northern family, from the sorceress Catelyn and the Wolf Warrior Throst to their daughters and granddaughter, bound to the seven magic stones in which the sorceress Aranwen imprisoned her power and to the Stone of Time that guards her pact of love and blood.
