Synopsis
The book opens right after The Sun Sword ends. The Terafin, the head of the merchant House that has adopted Jewel, has been killed by a demon, and a contest for the House Seat begins. Four candidates have declared themselves, but Jewel, who was the Terafin's chosen successor, has not yet said whether she will run. Once she does, demons attack her. She shuts a magical road against some of them and gains allies who are not human. Whether she and the people who stand with her will survive the war that is starting is unclear, and the contest for the House Seat is only the first of the battles she will face.
