Synopsis

The kingdom of Skala was once protected by a divine prophecy and a line of warrior queens: so long as a daughter of the royal line defends and rules, Skala will never be subjugated. Now the usurper king Erius reigns, and plague, drought and war with Plenimar have followed; determined to secure a male heir, he has every girl born to the royal line killed. When his sister secretly bears twins, a girl and a boy, the wizard Iya Ta'Sia and her apprentice Arkoniel, guided by the Lightbearer's oracle, enlist a hill witch, Lhel, in a forbidden magic: the girl is disguised in the shape of her stillborn brother and raised as Prince Tobin, while the sacrificed twin's spirit, bound to a bone doll, haunts the child who wears his face. A haunted childhood in a cursed keep begins the trilogy.

Notes

  • From the series record (The Tamír Triad): Lynn Flewelling's prequel trilogy, set in Skala some six centuries before the Nightrunner novels: the usurper king Erius kills every girl of the royal line, so the wizards of Illior and a hill witch hide the true heir, Tamír, in the magically borrowed shape of her dead twin brother, raised as Prince Tobin until she can claim the throne.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
