Overview
Nightrunner is a seven-novel secondary-world fantasy sequence (1996-2014) following Seregil, a master spy and thief operating under cover of nobility, and his younger partner Alec, through espionage, magic, and war between the rival kingdoms of Skala and Plenimar. Beginning with Luck in the Shadows (1996), Lynn Flewelling builds the series around the pair's work for Skala's intelligence network, weaving political thriller plotting, court intrigue, and an ancient magic tied to Skala's queendom together across the sequence's escalating stakes. The series is notable for its frank, unusually early treatment of its two male leads' romantic relationship within a traditional secondary-world political-fantasy structure, developing Seregil and Alec's partnership from mentor-and-student into an openly acknowledged romantic pairing over the course of the books, at a time when explicit queer relationships were still uncommon as a central thread in mainstream epic fantasy.

Lynn Flewelling's prequel trilogy, set in Skala some six centuries before the Nightrunner novels: the usurper king Erius kills every girl of the royal line, so the wizards of Illior and a hill witch hide the true heir, Tamír, in the magically borrowed shape of her dead twin brother, raised as Prince Tobin until she can claim the throne.
