Synopsis

Tobin has learned the horrifying truth: he was born a girl, hidden by magic in his dead brother's shape to escape the king's purge of female heirs, and he must go on hiding until the time comes to challenge the throne. At the royal court in Ero he is a Companion to Prince Korin, the king's son and his friend, while the king's wizard Niryn and his Harriers hunt down the free wizards who know the secret, and the angry ghost of the sacrificed twin, Brother, still shadows him. As Plenimar's armies gather and the king's war goes badly, Iya and Arkoniel struggle to keep the secret and the heir alive, and Tobin, caught between loyalty to Korin, love for his squire Ki and a destiny he did not choose, must prepare for the day the disguise burns away.

Notes

  • From the series record (The Tamír Triad): Lynn Flewelling's prequel trilogy, set in Skala some six centuries before the Nightrunner novels: the usurper king Erius kills every girl of the royal line, so the wizards of Illior and a hill witch hide the true heir, Tamír, in the magically borrowed shape of her dead twin brother, raised as Prince Tobin until she can claim the throne.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
