Synopsis

The Rats and the Ruling Sea, published by Robert V. S. Redick in 2009, is the second novel of the Chathrand Voyage. Having escaped the conspiracy uncovered in the first book, Pazel Pathkendle, Thasha Isiq, and their companions remain trapped aboard the Chathrand as it sails across the vast, dangerous Ruling Sea toward the port of Simja and beyond. The ship still carries the imprisoned rebel Mzithrin king Shaggat Ness, whose resurrection could reignite a devastating war, while the sabotaged peace treaty from the first book continues to unravel around them. Compounding matters, a cursed artifact known as the Nilstone, described as death given form, has been smuggled aboard, and its presence begins to have unnatural effects on the ship's rat population. Pazel and Thasha must work with unlikely allies, human and otherwise, to understand and contain the forces now loose on the ship.
