Overview

The Chathrand Voyage follows the crew and passengers of the IMS Chathrand, an ancient and enormous merchant ship, on a diplomatic voyage that becomes entangled in old magic and older political schemes across a wide, richly detailed nautical fantasy world. Robert V. S. Redick's four-book series -- The Red Wolf Conspiracy (2008), The Rats and the Ruling Sea (2009), The River of Shadows (2010), and The Night of the Swarm (2012) -- builds an entire secondary-world empire around the Chathrand itself, one of the last of a fleet of magically ancient sailing ships, whose ostensibly ceremonial voyage conceals a plot with consequences for two warring nations. The series is known for its large ensemble cast, including a rat-and-vermin subplot running alongside the human political intrigue, and for a slow-burn structure that spreads its central conspiracy's revelations across all four volumes.
