Robert von Stein Redick was born December 4, 1967, in Charlottesville, Virginia, and grew up between Virginia and Iowa City, Iowa. He studied English and Russian at the University of Virginia before earning a master's degree in Tropical Conservation and Development from the University of Florida, a background in international development that has informed the political and ecological texture of his fiction. Alongside his writing career, Redick has worked internationally as a freelance editor and development consultant in countries including Indonesia, Colombia, Argentina, the United Kingdom, and France; he currently lives in western Massachusetts. Redick is best known for the Chathrand Voyage quartet—The Red Wolf Conspiracy (2008), The Ruling Sea (2009), The River of Shadows (2011), and The Night of the Swarm (2013)—an epic nautical fantasy series following the enormous ship Chathrand and its crew through political intrigue, sorcery, and interspecies conflict across a richly imagined archipelago world. He subsequently began the Fire Sacraments series with Master Assassins (2018) and continued it with Sidewinders (2021), with a further installment planned. His shorter fiction has appeared in anthologies edited by prominent genre editors including Jonathan Strahan and Shawn Speakman. Redick's fantasy is distinguished by its scope and moral seriousness, often drawing on his real-world experience in international development and conservation to explore themes of colonialism, ecological catastrophe, and cross-cultural conflict within an adventurous, world-spanning fantasy framework.
