Synopsis
The second book of the Deathless Trilogy continues directly from the fracturing of House Sapphire, following three interwoven threads. A long-scheming member of the Sapphire dynasty seizes the chance to strike at rivals while the Deathless houses are already reeling from relentless attacks by creatures out of the Wild. In a floating castle, a strange and savage child resists being groomed as the vessel meant to carry Lord Rochant's consciousness after death, determined to escape a confinement dressed up as luxury. Elsewhere, another child, raised outside civilization by a creature of the Wild, possesses knowledge of its secrets unlike anyone among the Deathless, and his fate becomes bound up with the rivalries among the great houses. As the Wild itself begins to stir and grow bolder, these personal struggles edge toward a conflict that could reshape or topple the Deathless dynasties' long-held authority.
