Overview
Age of Misrule is a completed contemporary-fantasy trilogy in which the Celtic gods of the Tuatha Dé Danann and the monstrous Fomorii return to a modern Britain where technology has begun mysteriously failing, forcing a small band of ordinary people into an unwilling role at the center of a returning ancient myth cycle. World's End (1999) introduces that small band as they are drawn together and recruited, half against their will, to serve as champions in the gods' renewed war; Darkest Hour (2000) and Always Forever (2001) carry the war between the returned gods to its conclusion across a Britain increasingly stripped of the modern comforts and infrastructure its characters had taken for granted. Mark Chadbourn's trilogy was part of a wider late-1990s and early-2000s British trend of setting Celtic-mythology-based urban fantasy against a contemporary, technologically collapsing backdrop.
