Overview
The Finnbranch trilogy is a mythic, folklore-steeped fantasy rooted in Welsh and Irish mythology, telling the story of Finn, witch-son and bastard heir to kingdoms both on land and undersea, hidden away as a child by the witches of the north. Across Yearwood and Undersea, Finn grows out of hiding and into a perilous world of inherited magic and rival kingdoms as he seeks the birthright that is rightfully his. The trilogy's third book, Winterking, shifts its setting to an alternate-history version of contemporary America, where the same old, numinous gods and mythic forces resurface and threaten a modern landscape with terminal transformation. Told throughout in a dense, deliberately folkloric prose style, the trilogy was well received on its original publication in the early 1980s: Yearwood was a nominee for the Locus Award for Best First Novel, and Winterking was a nominee for the World Fantasy Award for Best Novel.
