Overview

Gwendalavir is a French-language heroic-fantasy world by Pierre Bottero, told across three completed trilogies (9 novels total, 2003-2008): La Quête d'Ewilan, its direct continuation Les Mondes d'Ewilan, and the companion trilogy Le Pacte des Marchombres following a supporting character. Sold over a million copies in France within five years of the first trilogy's release. The initial trilogy follows Camille, a teenage girl in contemporary France who discovers she can cross into Gwendalavir, a world under threat from an expanding, shape-shifting enemy empire, and that she is in fact Ewilan, a native of that world with rare drawing-based magic. Bottero's prose, aimed primarily at younger readers but widely read by adults, was noted for its pacing and worldbuilding depth within a comparatively compact page count per volume, and the trilogies remain among the best-known works of contemporary French-language fantasy for young readers, though Bottero died in a 2009 car accident before completing further Gwendalavir projects.
