Overview
Rusalka, also collectively published as The Russian Stories, is a complete three-book historical/mythic fantasy trilogy by American author C.J. Cherryh, published by Del Rey between 1989 and 1991. Set along the Dnieper River in an alternate medieval Russia thick with Slavic folklore, the first book follows a stable boy, Sasha, and a townsman, Pyetr, who take shelter with an old wizard hunting the truth behind his drowned daughter's fate as a rusalka — a restless water spirit sustaining herself on the life around her. The following two books widen the story into a battle against the dark sorcerer Chernevog and the entangled fates of Sasha, Pyetr, Eveshka, and their children, as the incompatibility of magic and an ordinary human life comes to a head.
