Overview
A completed four-novel Victorian and Edwardian-era fantasy sequence (1887-1923) by H. Rider Haggard, centered on Ayesha, an immortal, millennia-old sorceress ruling a hidden African kingdom, and the travelers whose lives she reshapes across each book. The second novel, Ayesha, the Return of She (1905), relocates much of the action to Central Asia, following Horace Holly and Leo Vincey as they pursue Ayesha nearly two decades after her apparent death, believing she has survived and been reincarnated as a priestess ruling a hidden mountain kingdom. The original 1887 novel She was adapted into a well-known 1935 film, and the series left a notable mark beyond genre fiction: both Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung referenced it in their own psychological writing.
