Overview
An amnesiac, shapeshifting woman awakens inside a dormant volcano with no memory of who she is, and travels across a primordial world of warring tribes and dying magic in search of her own origin. Tanith Lee's debut trilogy -- The Birthgrave (1975), Vazkor, Son of Vazkor (1978), and Quest for the White Witch (1978) -- is an early, influential entry in sword-and-sorcery fantasy built around a morally ambiguous, ever-changing protagonist whose shifting powers and appearance mirror her uncertain sense of self. The Birthgrave was a finalist for the 1976 Nebula Award for Best Novel, an unusual honor for a debut sword-and-sorcery work, and the trilogy's psychologically complex, frequently cruel protagonist helped distinguish Lee's approach to the subgenre from the more straightforwardly heroic tradition established by earlier sword-and-sorcery writers.
