Overview
The Salt Roads (2003) is a standalone historical fantasy novel by Nalo Hopkinson weaving together the lives of three women across widely separated centuries: Mer, an enslaved healer in eighteenth-century Saint-Domingue during the years before the Haitian Revolution; Jeanne Duval, a nineteenth-century performer and muse in Paris; and Thais, an enslaved woman in fourth-century Alexandria. The three lives are connected by Lasiren, a goddess born from their shared grief and suffering, who moves between and briefly inhabits each woman as the novel follows their separate, historically grounded struggles toward freedom and self-determination. Blending Vodou-derived spirituality with meticulously researched historical settings across three continents and two millennia, the novel was a finalist for the 2003 Nebula Award for Best Novel and won the 2005 Gaylactic Spectrum Award. It is a wholly separate, unrelated universe from Hopkinson's earlier Brown Girl in the Ring, sharing an author but no setting or characters.
