Overview

The Salt Roads is a standalone historical fantasy novel weaving together the lives of three women across centuries: Mer, an enslaved healer in 18th-century Saint-Domingue; Jeanne Duval, a 19th-century entertainer in Paris; and Thais, an enslaved woman in 4th-century Alexandria. The three lives are connected by the goddess Lasiren, born from their shared grief, who moves between and inhabits each woman as the novel follows their separate struggles toward freedom.

The novel was a finalist for the 2003 Nebula Award for Best Novel and won the 2005 Gaylactic Spectrum Award. It is a wholly separate, unrelated universe from Hopkinson's already-admitted Brown Girl in the Ring.
