Overview
The Star-Touched Queen is a YA fantasy duology built on Indian mythology and folklore, following Maya, a scholarly princess of the kingdom of Bharata whose ill-fated horoscope predicts a marriage to death itself, wed instead to Amar, the enigmatic ruler of Akaran, a realm accessible only through a magical Night Bazaar, in a match arranged to avert war between their kingdoms. Its companion novel, A Crown of Wishes, follows a different pair of protagonists competing in a deadly tournament in the same world, unfolding concurrently with events referenced in the first book. Roshani Chokshi's debut novel drew on both Greek mythological structure and South Asian folklore to build its otherworldly setting, part of a wave of mid-2010s YA fantasy that drew more explicitly on non-European mythic traditions.
