Overview

Two rival newspaper columnists, Iris Winnow and Roman Kitt, unknowingly become anonymous pen pals after Iris starts writing letters to her missing brother and slipping them into an enchanted wardrobe, even as their homeland is drawn into a war between two warring gods. Rebecca Ross's completed two-book duology, Divine Rivals (2023) and Ruthless Vows (2023), follows the pair as their workplace rivalry at a struggling newspaper deepens alongside their unwitting long-distance correspondence, while both are eventually pulled toward the war's front lines as it escalates around their city. The duology built a strong readership through word-of-mouth on social media and quickly climbed bestseller lists on release, drawing coverage from major publishing trade press as one of the notable romantasy breakouts of 2023. Ross, previously known primarily for young-adult fantasy, wrote the series for an adult and older-teen readership, blending epistolary romance with a god-versus-god war narrative.
