Overview

Paula Volsky’s five standalone novels from 1991 to 2000 share one invented world loosely modelled on the history of nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Europe and its empires, centred on the kingdom, later republic, of Vonahr. Each book takes a historical upheaval and reimagines it with magic: Illusion follows a noblewoman through a revolution modelled on France’s; The Gates of Twilight is set in the colonial city of ZuLaysa as its people plot against their Vonahrish occupiers; The Grand Ellipse turns on a long race across the continent. The books can be read in any order. Illusion and The Grand Ellipse were Locus Award finalists, and The Grand Ellipse was a World Fantasy Award nominee.
