Chris d'Lacey was born in Valletta, Malta, in 1954, and grew up in Leicester and then Bolton in England. He studied biology at the University of York and went on to work in the Pre-Clinical Sciences department at the University of Leicester, where he still operates a confocal microscope, although writing is now his main source of income. He began writing songs first, and started writing fiction at the age of 32 with a long polar bear story written for his wife. His first children's novel, Fly, Cherokee, Fly, appeared in 1998 and was shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal. He has since written more than twenty books for children, among them The Last Dragon Chronicles, Horace, Gruffen and the Erth Dragons. The Fire Within won the Rotherham Children's Book Award in 2002, and the University of Leicester gave him an honorary doctorate the same year. Environmental themes often appear in his work.
