John Gwynne was born in 1968 in the United Kingdom and studied at the University of Brighton, where he later taught before turning to writing full time. An active participant in Viking historical reenactment, he has said the experience shapes how he depicts combat and equipment in his fiction, alongside influences from Bernard Cornwell's novels and films such as Braveheart. He is best known for the four-book series The Faithful and the Fallen (Malice, Valour, Ruin, and Wrath), the Of Blood and Bone trilogy, and The Bloodsworn Saga, begun in 2021 and drawing on Norse mythology and the Viking Age. Malice won the David Gemmell Morningstar Award in 2013, and Wrath won a BookNest Award for Best Traditionally Published Novel in 2017; a later volume, The Fury of the Gods, reached the New York Times Trade Fiction Paperback list in November 2024.
