Tendai Huchu, who also publishes as T.L. Huchu, was born on September 28, 1982, in Bindura, Zimbabwe. Although Shona is his first language, he was educated primarily in English and has written about the tension this created for a writer working in a colonial-inherited literary tradition. He emigrated to the United Kingdom in 2002 in search of greater economic opportunity and now lives in Edinburgh, Scotland, where he has also worked as a podiatrist. His debut novel, The Hairdresser of Harare (2010), was translated into German, French, Italian, and Spanish, and his second, The Maestro, The Magistrate & The Mathematician (2014), follows Zimbabwean exiles living in Scotland. Under the name T.L. Huchu he has since become known for the Edinburgh Nights urban fantasy series, following teenage medium Ropa Moyo as she communicates with ghosts to solve mysteries in a magic-infused Edinburgh; the series now runs to five novels. He also writes short fiction and nonfiction across multiple genres for numerous literary magazines and anthologies, and translated work by Ngugi wa Thiong'o into Shona for the Jalada language project. His honors include a Hawthornden Fellowship and a Sacatar Fellowship (both 2013), a Caine Prize shortlisting (2014), multiple Nommo Awards, the Alex Award (2022), and a CABA Award (2021).
