Overview

Devon Monk's Allie Beckstrom novels, first published by Roc in 2008, are set in a version of Portland, Oregon where using magic costs the user something, such as migraines, lost memories or aching muscles, and spellcasters pay by pushing that cost onto other people. Allie Beckstrom is a Hound who traces illegal spells back to their casters. She is drawn into the secret Authority and into a fight over her late father's plans with Zayvion Jones. Nine books follow Allie. The Broken Magic spin-off, starting with Hell Bent in 2013, follows Shame Flynn and Terric Conley and ends with Dirty Work in 2023, which the publisher describes as the final book.
