Overview
Swords and Fire and Rooks and Ruin are two linked trilogies set in the same world: the Serene Empire, a network of city-states ruled through bound magical talents, and Vaskandar, its rival to the north, ruled by shapeshifting warlords. Melissa Caruso's Swords and Fire (2017-2019) follows Amalia Cornaro, a noblewoman-in-training bound by imperial law to a fire warlock she must control or be controlled by, as political intrigue and war between the two powers threaten to erupt. Rooks and Ruin (2020-2022) is set roughly a century and a half later and follows Ryx, a warden with a dangerous curse of her own, and the magical-crisis response team known as the Rookery, as they confront threats that have grown out of the earlier trilogy's unresolved history. Together the two trilogies span six novels and over a decade of in-world time, sharing setting and consequence while each following a distinct cast.
