Hugh Walter Gilbert Cook was born on 9 August 1956 in Billericay, Essex. He spent his early childhood in England, moved to Ocean Island (now Banaba) in Kiribati in 1962, and to New Zealand in 1964, where he was educated. He served ten years in the New Zealand Army as a medic, reaching the rank of sergeant, and published his first novel, Plague Summer, in 1980. He left the army to write full time. Chronicles of an Age of Darkness was written between 1986 and 1992; planned as sixty volumes, it stopped at ten because of disappointing sales. In 1997 he moved to Yokohama, Japan, where he taught English, and from 1998 to 2005 he published mainly through his own website. In 2005 he was treated for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and wrote a medical memoir, Cancer Patient. He died on 8 November 2008 in a hospice in Auckland.
