Andrzej Sapkowski is a Polish fantasy author born June 21, 1948, in Łódź, Poland. He studied economics at the University of Łódź and worked as a sales representative for a foreign trade company before beginning his literary career as a science fiction translator. His breakthrough came in 1986 when his short story "The Witcher" won third prize in a contest held by the magazine Fantastyka; he later credited his business background with giving him an intuitive sense of how to market his fiction. The Witcher series, comprising three short story collections and eight novels centered on the monster hunter Geralt of Rivia, draws heavily on Slavic mythology and folklore, and has sold more than thirty million copies worldwide in thirty-seven languages, making Sapkowski the second most-translated Polish science fiction and fantasy writer after Stanisław Lem. He also wrote the Hussite Trilogy (2002–2006), a work of historical fiction set during the fifteenth-century Hussite Wars, and returned to the Witcher universe with Crossroads of Ravens in 2024. His honors include six Zajdel Awards, the World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement in 2016, the David Gemmell Legend Award in 2009, and Poland's Gloria Artis Medal for Merit to Culture in both silver (2014) and gold (2025).
