Kristen Britain was born October 18, 1965, and grew up in New York's Finger Lakes region, where she began writing fiction at age nine and self-published a cartoon collection called Horses and Horsepeople at age thirteen. She graduated from Ithaca College in 1987 with a degree in film production and a minor in writing. In 1988 she joined the National Park Service after a conversation with a park ranger, holding seasonal and full-time positions at historic sites and parks including the Clara Barton National Historic Site and Acadia National Park in Maine, where she now lives. Britain is the author of the Green Rider fantasy series, a saga centered on magical messengers serving a fictional kingdom, comprising nine books as of 2024 beginning with Green Rider (1998) and continuing through First Rider's Call (2003), The High King's Tomb (2007), Blackveil (2011), Mirror Sight (2014), Firebrand (2017), Winterlight (2021), and Spirit of the Wood (2023). Green Rider was nominated for both the Crawford Award and the Locus Award for Best First Novel, launching what has become recognized as an influential and long-running work of American fantasy fiction. Blackveil later received a nomination from a widely followed reader-voted fantasy awards program in 2011, further extending the series' reach among genre readers over more than two decades of continuous publication.
