Robert Lynn Asprin was born on June 28, 1946, in St. Johns, Michigan, and died on May 22, 2008, in New Orleans of heart failure; he was found lying on a sofa with a Terry Pratchett novel still open in his hands. He attended the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor from 1964 to 1965 and served in the United States Army from 1965 to 1966. A prominent figure in science fiction fandom, he was active in the Society for Creative Anachronism under the persona "Yang the Nauseating," co-initiated the Great Dark Horde group in 1971, and helped establish the Dorsai Irregulars fan organization. His first novel, The Cold Cash War, appeared in 1977, but he became best known for the humorous MythAdventures series, beginning with Another Fine Myth (1978) and following the demon Aahz and apprentice magician Skeeve. He also created and edited, with Lynn Abbey, the influential shared-world fantasy anthology series Thieves' World, and wrote the Phule's Company military science fiction comedy series in the 1990s, later collaborating with Jody Lynn Nye and other authors. He received a Hugo Award nomination in 1976 for Best Dramatic Presentation for The Capture, a cartoon slide show. His archive was donated to Northern Illinois University's Rare Books and Special Collections in 2008.
