Tanya Sue Huff was born in 1957 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and raised in Kingston, Ontario. She served in the Canadian Naval Reserve as a cook from 1975 to 1979 before earning a Bachelor of Applied Arts in Radio and Television Arts from Ryerson Polytechnic University in 1982, where she studied alongside future science fiction writer Robert J. Sawyer. Huff sold her first professional short story to Amazing Stories in 1985, with editor George Scithers publishing the piece. From 1984 to 1992 she worked at Bakka, North America's oldest science fiction bookstore, located in Toronto, while writing seven novels and nine short stories in her spare time. In 1992 she relocated to rural Ontario, where she has since lived with her wife, fellow fantasy author Fiona Patton. Huff is regarded as one of the most prominent Canadian authors working in contemporary fantasy, a subgenre pioneered by Charles de Lint, and has published extensively across fantasy, urban fantasy, and military science fiction. Her best-known work is the Blood Books series, following vampire detective duo Henry Fitzroy and Vicki Nelson; it was adapted into the television series Blood Ties, which aired on CBC Television and Lifetime for a single season. Huff also created the popular Confederation and Valor military science fiction series. She appeared in the 2009 documentary Pretty Bloody: The Women of Horror, reflecting her long-standing influence on genre fiction featuring strong, often queer, protagonists.
