Overview
An illustrated secondary-world fantasy series by British writer Paul Stewart and illustrator Chris Riddell, set on a jagged, floating rock called the Edge, ringed by a storm-wracked void and inhabited by sky pirates, academics, and strange creatures. Across thirteen novels published between 1998 and 2019, the story is told through three overlapping generational arcs, each following a different descendant of the same family through the Deepwoods, the hive city of Undertown, and the flying academic city of Sanctaphrax. Beyond the Deepwoods (1998) opens the first arc; later volumes such as The Curse of the Gloamglozer and The Winter Knights shift focus to earlier or later generations, building a continuous internal chronology. Riddell's dense pen-and-ink illustrations are integral to the books rather than decorative, and the series has remained continuously in print in the UK since its debut, building a devoted readership among younger fantasy readers alongside more traditional epic fantasy.
