Kim Harrison is the pen name of Dawn Cook, born in 1966. She largely avoided English courses beyond basic requirements in high school and college, and began her writing career in science fiction before shifting to contemporary fantasy to focus more on character development. After roughly a decade of trying to break into publishing, she met her literary agent at a writers' convention, leading to the 2004 publication of her first novel, Dead Witch Walking, after which she left her day job to write full time. She is best known for the Hollows series, an urban fantasy series following witch and bounty hunter Rachel Morgan that has grown to more than a dozen novels since 2004, alongside companion graphic novels and a world-reference guide. Writing as Dawn Cook, she has also published the Truth series and the Decoy Princess novels. She is a member of the International Thriller Writers organization.
