Nikolay Daniilovich Perumov, who writes as Nick Perumov, was born on 21 November 1963 in Leningrad, USSR. His father was a biologist. He began writing short stories as a teenager and became a fantasy fan after reading The Lord of the Rings in the early 1980s. He studied at the Leningrad Polytechnical Institute, worked at a research institute, and then worked as a translator. After his debut books succeeded, he became a professional writer. Around the time of the 1998 Russian financial crisis he moved to the United States, where he works as a microbiologist at the North Carolina Research Campus while continuing to write. He has published cycles set in his Ordered Worlds multiverse as well as science fiction, technofantasy and historical fantasy. At Eurocon 2004 he received the European Science Fiction Society award for Best Author. Wikipedia reports that his books have sold more than four million copies.
