Markus Heitz was born on October 10, 1971, in Homburg, in what was then West Germany. He studied history, literature, and the German language at university before beginning his writing career in 2002. A prolific and versatile German novelist working across fantasy, horror, and science fiction, Heitz currently resides in Zweibrücken, Germany. He is best known internationally for The Dwarves series, a dark epic fantasy saga that has been translated into nine English-language volumes, with additional installments published only in German; the series follows the dwarf Tungdil Goldhand as he confronts ancient evils threatening the world of Girdlegard. Heitz has also written The Legends of the Älfar series, exploring the perspective of a cruel and sophisticated elven civilization, along with numerous other standalone novels and series spanning his adopted genres. His extensive bibliography, encompassing dozens of titles across fantasy, horror, and science fiction, has made him one of the best-selling fantasy authors writing in German, with a substantial readership both domestically and, through translation, internationally. Heitz continues to actively publish new fiction, maintaining a prolific output that has sustained his reputation as a leading figure in contemporary German-language genre fiction for over two decades.
